Jan 6, 2022 · Recently watched Mallick's Badlands for the first time, even tho im not a huge fan of his other famous work like Days of Heaven and New World, this film was phenomenal. Everything from the acting to the plot to the cinematography to the music. I've never seen a film that was so stunning to look at and still be relatively plot driven.

Badlands is interesting to come back to later as you can see the genesis of his stylistic idiosyncracies, with some knowledge of where he is headed. His later career work (To the Wonder and every subsequent film) veers into extremely Malicky territory, I wouldn't recommend going there unless you've seen his mid-career stuff and enjoyed it.

Jul 17, 2014 · badlands dealt cards on a much smaller table - it wasn't condemning or making heroes of anyone. there was a man - a possibly quite mad man - and a child. they killed some people, and no one felt bad about it. if you're gonna extrapolate anything from badlands, it should be more about the eternal human soul than media coverage.

None of the responses I've seen here really capture its essence, so I'll try and take a stab at it. Badlands is about morality and immorality. About freedom of choice and freedom from consequence. It's about romanticization and reality.

In hindsight I should've spaced them out much more to let the movies marinate and a chance for me to really take them in. I plan on watching Days of Heaven and the Tree of Life again in the comings weeks.
